Chemical Bonding is an important chapter for ICSE Chemistry Examination. Different types of questions are framed from this chapter every year for the ICSE examination. On the basis of the analysis of the previous years' board paper, we find out the following types of questions which asked very frequently. This analysis is very useful for the preparation of the 2021 examination. you can also find the model answer of different types of questions to improve the writing skills for the coming board examination 2021.
Question-based on the type of bond and formulae
Question (1) The following table shows the electronic configuration of the elements W, X, Y, Z:
Element |

Answer the following questions based on the table above:
(i) What type of bond is formed between:
(a) W and X
(b) Y and Z
Answer:
(a) Electrovalent Bond
(b) Covalent Bond
(ii) What is the formula of the compound formed between:
(a) X and Z
(b) W and X
Answer:
(a) ZX
(b) WX
Question-based on properties of compounds
Question (2) Elements Q and S react together to form an ionic compound. Under normal conditions, which physical state will the compound QS exist in? Can Q and S, both be metals? Justify your answer.
Answer:
Solid, Both Q and S cannot be metal. One of them would be a non – metal. As QS is an ionic compound in which Q is a metal which loses electrons and forms positive ion (cation) and S gain electron to form negative ion (anion). It means Q should be metal and S should be non – metal.
Question-based on reasons
Question (3) Give a reason why hydrogen chloride can be termed as a polar covalent compound.
Answer: Hydrogen chloride is termed as polar covalent compound due to the large electronegativity difference between hydrogen and chlorine atom. Chlorine being more electronegative attracts the shared pair of electron towards itself and form a partial negative charge and partial positive charge over hydrogen ion.
Question-based on reduction and oxidation
Question (4) Electrons are getting added to an element Y.
(i) Is Y getting oxidised or reduced?
(ii) What charge will Y have after the addition of electrons?
(iii) Which electrode will Y migrate to during the process of electrolysis?
Answer:
(i) Y is reduced
(ii) Negative charge
(iii) Anode
